New York Times Visual Investigations Team

Malachy Browne is a member of the New York Times team producing visual investigations, a new form of accountability journalism and documentary-making that combines traditional approaches with online sleuthing and digital forensics. In 2021, Malachy co-directed “Day of Rage”, a 40-minute film that showed in chilling detail how the riot at the U.S. Capitol unfolded. The immersive film was based on thousands of cellphone videos – many filmed by the rioters themselves – police body camera videos, surveillance footage inside the Capitol and the internal police radio recordings.

Malachy Browne has produced award-winning investigations into the Russian bombing of hospitals in Syria, the killing of Breonna Taylor, the Las Vegas mass shooting, the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and the killing of a young Palestinian medic along the Gaza-Israel border. He was on a team awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2020 and has received four News and Documentary Emmys, among other acknowledgements. Malachy is from Limerick, Ireland.
